The blue banded bee (Amegilla cingulata) is an Australian solitary native bee species which is about 10-15mm long. They are one of the few bees which have blue stripes instead of the distinctive yellow of other species. Although females will build their nest alone, multiple females may build in the same location and males will often cluster together at night on branches or stems. A friend gave me a dead blue banded bee today and I’ve taken a few pictures under the dissecting microscope which were rather interesting. Once I finish dissecting the honey bee and Tetragonula carbonariaI’d be interested to have a more detailed look at this bee’s anatomy.
