My urban meliponary

Many friends beekeepers and related join this wonderful activity wonder all the time if you can have a meliponary of stingless bees in homes in the city and large urban centers ...

Most stakeholders often end up giving up on the idea of starting the activity for lack of space in your home, for lack providing pollen pasture in the vicinity of where you live, and even if some big city the idea becomes a dream! Unless those who have some ranch, or farm site and resolve to make a small meliponary, and as we have seen reports and watched with my own eyes because of the large amount of pesticides in certain rural locations, many swarms end up dying or some times languishing due to lack of pollen and nectar, that's right, because there is lack ... where there's only sugar cane pastures in the vicinity!

Well friends, oddly enough in some cases it is much safer to have a meliponary in urban centers than in rural locations poorly located. What's more, in many cities there are areas of environmental preservation, tree-lined avenues (many trees these avenues are excellent honey and pollen source for ASF) and large amounts of fruit trees in backyards and etc.

So for those who still think for lack of forest, for lack of large space, here's the example of Meliponary Golden Bee (my meliponary!) Here where I live is near the city center and lack space in my backyard, but it's nothing that a good idea until now, a makeshift shelf over there, some pillars scattered in strategic locations ... and so you can be like me + or - some 100 swarms in your home! But of course without artificial feeding, and with much love and dedication on your part and the patience of his wife, mother, grandmother, or whoever more with you is also essential for good activity!

In the photos below you can all see that there are several ways to mount a shelf without much cost, as a cheap and good example for the management I use concrete blocks 40 cm alt. to a base for use as a shelf or individual basis. Or also use French hands (hooks L) of 1 by 1 meter and up by a board of 3 or 5 meters ... In short, use your creativity!

If your house has a winter garden, place it but aggressive species as Tubuna, Mandi, Mandi yellow, Borá and etc.

One can use steel shelves with several tabs ...

All meliponary must have an area reserved for useful gear for the activity, in addition to boxes stocks!

Tip: always leave together in a basket or plastic box that's next to you to load, utilities you will use when you multiply a swarm or servicing. Such as: masking tape, vinegar, Phoridae trap, screwdrivers, knives, brush (w / kill the phorid + easily), wax sheet, disposable cups, syrup w / feed, etc.

A very important tip: Just put swarms a side of another of the same species! Do not try by different species very close to each other, and when you have no way put the swarm entries in opposite directions! Is essential tip is to not occur fights over territory and lead the swarm to decline.

Here I have no land, more is not why I can not have nature! Plant fruit trees or bushes honey varieties in large pots. As an example I have in Morrão-of-lamp vessels, Marianeira, Pitanga, Multre, Coconut and other plants that bees like!

Another good tip when no more floor space is just hang on ranch eaves, and support in windows of bars!

On the different species in the same area ... I own here mandaçaia (QA and QQ), true Uruçu yellow Uruçu (M. flavolineata), guaraipo (M. Bicolor Shenki), gray Uruçu (M. fasciculata), Mandi ( M. marginata), Tubuna (S. bipunctata), Mandi (S. Postica), Tubiba (S. Tubiba), yellow Mandaguari (S. Xantotricha), Borá (T. Clavipes), Jataí, Iraí Marmalade (F. Varies ), Toad Mouth (P. helleri), droriana Mirim Mirim laziness, Mirim Emerina, Lick eyes (L. muelleri) ...

All live very well without a fight for territory, you just know where to put the different species and which may be closer!
I hope you all like my example and my tips and to use to start an urban meliponary!
A big hug to all ...
