NATIVE BEE WORKSHOP PHOTOS

These are a selected few of a series of photos from a workshop held by Dr. Tim Heard in Chapel Hill, 2011.

Featured are both Tetragonula carbonaria and Tetragonula hockingsi, carbonaria having the spiral brood and hockingsi having the "brain".

The workshop involves native bee theory, honey tasting and hive-splitting demonstrations. I would recommend the course to anyone interested in keeping bees or learning more about our diverse fauna here in Australia.

From a personal point-of-view, don't rush out and buy a hive unless you are committed to the continuation of the species, protecting them from their loss of habitat. Their abilities as pollinators, particularly for Macadamia, are well-known but the frugal gardener would be better served by encouraging European and Blue-Banded Bees into their gardens with a greater selection of flowering plants.

Here are some bees from my hive on a flowering Sweet Basil.

And some photos of my hive which is a recovered log from a Eucalyptus microcorys.
